Call Number Prefix / Suffix

AVM - Where are the items with the [AVM] call number prefix located?

They are audio-visual materials located in the Multimedia and Language Learning Centre (MLLC) on 2/F, North Wing of the Library.

 

LTV - Where are the items with the “LTV” call number suffix located?

LTV are Local television programmes shelved inside the Multimedia and Language Learning Centre on 2/F. These items can also be viewed online from http://www.library.ln.edu.hk/find/local-tv-programmes.

 

LBK - Where are the books with the [LBK] call number prefix located?

LBK stands for Large Book Collection. There are two locations for Large Books. Those in the call number range A-N are located on the 1/F North Wing and those in the call number range P-Z are on the 3/F.

 

REF - Where are the books with the [REF] call number prefix located?

REF stands for REFerence books. These are books such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, bibliographies, etc. that can normally be used in the Library only. They are located on the 1/F, South Wing near the Information Commons.

 

RES - Where are the items with the [RES3H], [RES2D], [RES7D] call number prefixes located?

RES stands for REServe Collection. These are usually required or recommended course readings put on reserve by teaching staff so that all students have a chance to read them. These items can only be checked out for 3 hours / 2 days / 7 days based on the teacher's request. Reserved items are shelved behind the Circulation Counter. You can check them out by presenting the call number to library staff at the Circulation Counter.

SER - Where are the items with the [SER] call number prefix located?

SER stands for SERials Collection (mainly journals, magazines and newsletters). The Serials Collection is located on the 2/F. Current issues are on the display shelves, while the bound volumes are located on the compact shelves.

 

Dictionary Stand - Where are the locations of items with “Dictionary Stand” as call number?

There are six Dictionary Stands (D1-D6) located throughout the Library.

Item Status

In-Process items - What are "In-Process" items?

"In-Process" items are recently acquired items pending final processing. If you want to borrow them, you can click the "Request" button under the record you found in the library catalogue. The item will be made available in 3 working days and you can check your circulation record or email account to find out if the item is ready for pick-up. To request in-process audio-visual items, you must fill in the relevant forms. For members of staff who require the items for teaching purposes, the items will be made available within 3 working days and you will also be notified when the item is ready for pick-up. For non-teaching purpose items, the requests will be treated on a first come first serve basis, you will be notified once the item is available.

 

On-Display items - What are "On-Display" items?

The book is a new item and is put on New Book Display on the 2/F of the Library. During the one-week display period, the book can still be checked out.

 

Bindery items - What are “Bindery” items?

An item with status “bindery” means it is sent to the bindery for repair or binding. It is difficult to say when the item will be available again since the book is usually sent out of the Library for binding services.

 

I find a message like "1 copy ordered for General Collection 3/F on 07-05-2014." but there is no status or call number. What does that mean?

It means that we have made an order of the book on 07/05/2014 but the book still has not arrived. It is suggested that you check HKALL to see if this book is available from another local university library.

 

LC Call Number

What is LC call number?

The Library of Congress Classification (LCC) is a system of library classification developed by the Library of Congress. All library materials are classified under this scheme. An outline of the main subject divisions of the LC Classification can be found here.
