Conciliatory motion; Harbour Fest fiasco; Business and politics (25 Jun 2004)

A few days before the July 1 mass protests, Hong Kong legislators voted unanimously for the motion raised by Mr. Martin Lee calling for mutual trust and dialogues between Hong Kong's pro-democracy camp and the central government. In the same Legco meeting, the Public Accounts Committee recommended the government to discipline the responsbile civil servant, Mr. Mike Rowse, for the Harbour Fest fiasco. In a speech before the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the Chief Secretary, Mr. Donald Tsang, called for the business sector to participate more actively in politics in various ways. Business leaders and analysts were also interviewed to comment on the role of the business sector.
