This week one of the world'd most respected living sopranos is in town. She's Renee Fleming, and this Friday and Saturday she's performing – with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra – a selection of songs by Richard Strauss. The Works spoke to her this morning. The Man Hong Kong International Literary Festival ended last week, and in our previous show we introduced you to some of the authors who were here as part of the event. In tonight's show we talk to two more: "The Joy Luck Club" author Amy Tan, and illustrator Peter Suart. Born in Hong Kong, Ruby Yang is now based in Beijing, directing public service announcements and a wide range of documentary work as part of the China AIDS Media Project. In collaboration with filmmaker Thomas F. Lennon, this HIV/AIDS prevention campaign has reached millions of Chinese viewers. One of their films "The Blood of Yingzhou District" won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short. For those without too much knowledge of classical history, the Battle of Thermopylae doesn't exactly sound a promising subject for a movie, or even a graphic novel. If you do know more about it, you'll realise it involved the legendary 300 Spartans, who sacrificed themselves to keep the Persian army at bay. Frank Miller turned their story into a graphic novel. Now Zack Snyder's turned it into a movie: "300". Gary Pollard talks to us about it. We're ending tonight's programme with a preview by young dancers from the City Contemporary Dance Company of a performance "C'est La Vie, C'est L'Amour" which is coming up in April.
