Lingnan University Library was one
of the initial three partners of the Hong Kong
Academic Library Link (香港高校圖書聯網). Based on the successful trial of resource
sharing through HKALL (港書網) and the
overwhelming positive responses from users, the University Grants Committee
provided full support this year for expanding the service to all of the 8 UGC
institutions.
Based on a specialized software from Innovative Interfaces Incorporated, HKALL maintains a union catalogue of a
collection of 9 million monographs, audio-visual items, magazines and other
materials held in the 8 UGC libraries. Staff and students of the participating
institutions can search the union catalogue, make direct requests of these
materials, and have the materials delivered to the requesters’ host libraries
for further checkout within 3 days. The HKALL
is a visionary and pioneering project in this part of the world. It is envisaged
that HKALL will have far reaching influences
on resource sharing and users’ access to information.
