In recent years, Lingnan University Library has been seen as an active community, serving important educational purposes that are beyond a gateway to scholarly information. The Library has manifested itself as a local cultural centre on campus, offering boundless opportunities for cultural enrichment and knowledge discovery. It is making its presence felt with activities and exhibitions. For example, the Library Foyer is the site of some book launches and art exhibition openings. Last semester, many students and teachers attended the book launch, Cross-dressing in Chinese Opera by Prof. Li Siu-Leung and the art exhibition, Exhibition on the Artistic Reading of Nushu, sponsored by the Cultural Studies Department.
The goal and the driving force behind the idea of Library as Cultural Centre is not only the public relationship value or encouraging the circulation of library materials. In many cases, the benefits have been found through closer collaboration with different academic and research departments, local student groups and external organizations. Local groups, organizations, and individuals are invited to participate in arranging exhibitions, lectures, workshops, etc., which are of high cultural and educational values and interests, with the aim of creating an environment for our students to:
1. Enable and facilitate free exchanges of intellectual, creative and artistic ideas with the teaching staff and the guest lectures or artists, in order to stimulate and satisfy intellectual growth;
2. Promote awareness of local and foreign arts, and cultures among the students. Arts and cultures could therefore be outreached to all sectors on campus, and to cross over with students of other or interactive disciplines, and yet be relevant to their education;
3. Promote awareness of research interests of individual academic departments or staff; Convert the Library into a lively and diverse resource base, with ever-changing culturally and educationally enriching programmes of contemporary visual arts, literature, culture, social and political discussions and thereby supporting Lingnan mission of providing the best liberal arts education to students.
