Call Number Prefix / Suffix
AVM - Where are the locations of items with "AVM" call number prefix?
They are Audio Visual materials located in the Multimedia and Language Learning Centre (MLLC) on 2/F, North Wing of the Library. For more information on the call number prefix for Audio visual materials, please refer to this webpage.
LTV - Where are the locations of items with “LTV” call number suffix?
LTV are Local TV programmes shelved at the Multimedia and Language Learning Centre (2/F). These items can also be viewed online from http://www.library.ln.edu.hk/eresources/ltv/.
LBK - Where are the locations of books with "LBK" call number prefix?
LBK stands for Large Books. Both Chinese and English large books (LBK) are located on the 1/F North Wing for LC class range A-N and 3/F South Wing for LC class range P-Z.
REF - Where are the locations of books with "REF" call number prefix?
REF stands for REFerence books. These are dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, statistics, bibliographies, etc. that normally can be used only in the Library. They are located on the 1/F near the Information Commons . For information on the call number prefix, please read this document.
RES - Where are the locations of the items with "RES3H / RES2D / RES7D" call number prefixes?
RES stands for class REServe collection. These are usually required or recommended readings reserved by teaching staff so every student has a chance to read them. These items can only be checked out for 3 hours / 2 days / 7 days based on the teacher's request. They are shelved at the Circulation Counter or in the 1/F Reading Room and must be checked out by showing the call number to library staff at the Circulation Counter. SER - Where are the locations of items with "SER" call number prefix?
SER stands for SERials collection (mainly journals, magazines and newsletters). The serials collection is located on the 2/F. For information on the call number prefix, please read this document.
Dictionary Stand - Where are the locations of items with “Dictionary Stand” as call number?
There are six Dictionary Stands (D1-D6) located in the Library. For exact location of each stand, please refer to the floor plan:

Item Status
In-Process items - What are "in process" items?
"In-Process" items are recently acquired items pending final processing. If you want to borrow the item, you can click the "Request" button under the record you found in the library catalogue. The item will be made available in 3 working days and you can check your circulation record or email account to find out if the item is ready for pick-up. To request in-process audiovisual items, you must fill in the relevant forms. For members of staff who require the items for teaching purposes, the items will be made available within 3 working days and you will also be notified when the item is ready for pick-up. For non-teaching purpose items, the requests will be treated on a first come first served basis, you will be notified once the item is available.
On-Display items - What are "on display" items?
The book is a new item and is put on new book display on 2/F, Library. During the one-week display period, the book can still be checked out.
Bindery items - What are “bindery” items?
An item with status “bindery” means it is sent to bindery for repairing or binding. It is hard to say when the item will be available again since usually the Library sends out books for outside services.
I find a message like "1 copy ordered for General collection 3/F on 31-12-2007." but there is no status or call number. What does that mean?
It means that we have made an order of the book on 31/12/2007 but the book still has not arrived. You are suggested to check HKALL to see if this book may be available from another local university library.
Lai's Call Number
What is Lai's call number?
Lai’s classification is another name for the New Classification Scheme for Chinese Libraries (中國圖書分類法) by Lai Yongxiang (賴永祥). Up until June 2006, all Chinese materials in the Library were classified under this scheme. As the Library’s Reclassification Project progresses, more and more Chinese materials will be converted from the Lai’s scheme to the Library of Congress (LCC) scheme. As of Aug 2009, Chinese materials in the Reference Collection (REF), Large Book Collection (LBK), AV Collection (AVM), Serials Collection (SER) and the Reserve Collection (RES) have been converted and interfiled with English materials. Conversion of Chinese books in the General Collection is in progress.
LC Call Number
What is LC call number?
The Library of Congress Classification (LCC) is a system of library classification developed by the Library of Congress. An outline of the main subject divisions of LC Classification can be found here. At present, the Reference Collection (REF), the Large Book Collection (LBK), the Serials Collection (SER), the Reserve Collection (RES) and the AV Collection (AVM) as well as all English books in the General Collection are classified under this scheme. Conversion of Chinese books in the General Collection to this scheme is in progress.
