In 2015, the United Nations (UN) adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the focal point of a global campaign to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that every person in the world is in a position to enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.

The academic world is shifting its focus from traditional metrics toward social and environmental sustainability. The two most widely recognized university ranking bodies — Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and Times Higher Education (THE) — now integrate SDG performance directly into their evaluation frameworks.

QS Sustainability Rankings: Launched in 2023, these rankings focus specifically on social and environmental sustainability performance.
THE University Impact Rankings: Established in 2019, these assess universities specifically against the United Nations’ SDGs.
