As Hong Kong companies have moved their manufacturing activities to mainland China it's been good news for local artists, many of whom have rented spaces for studios in the disused industrial spaces. New arts communities have sprung up in areas like Fotan, Kwun Tong, and Chai Wan. This year, many of them are opening their doors to the public over the next couple of weekends as part of the City Festival's "bzb Art Outings". Alejandro Inarritu's "Babel" has just been chosen as Best Film at the Golden Globe Film Awards. It also earned Inarritu himself the Best Director Award at the Cannes film festival. It tells the linked stories of a group of Moroccan peasants; an American couple travelling to overcome the loss of a child, a Mexican maid, and a troubled Japanese deaf-mute schoolgirl whose mother recently killed herself. Gary Pollard talks to us about it. In our studio tonight, the big band sound, as singer Elaine Liu treats us to two standards in the company of the Saturday Night Jazz Orchestra. It's a terrific double bill, so make sure not to miss it.
