Between ideal and reality (12 Aug 2003)


Through the examples of an artist-turned-art teacher Yeung Sau Cheuk, a practising installation artist Kam Chi Keung, and two of Yeung's students who want to pursue a career in art, the programme looks at the obstacles in the path of anyone trying to put their ideal into practice either as an artist or as an art educator. The reality of arts education in the secondary school is that free expression and experimentation is possible only in the first three years. In the last two years even arts education has to cater to the examination system. Creativity has to give way to practical rules of the game. But arts education does not have to end when one leaves school. With perseverance and dedication it can continue beyond formal education.
