Election in Taiwan (21 Mar 2004)

Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian was re-elected by a razor-thin majority a day after an attempt on his life. Willy Lam Wo-lap (Political Commentator) says the assassination attempt has changed the outcome of the election and opposition candidate, Lien Chan, has valid ground to ask for a recount. Richard Hu Weixing (Director, Master of International and Public Affairs Programme, University of Hong Kong) says there are irregularities in the election process but recount may not overturn the result. Agrees that the event in Taiwan will cause Beijing to take a conservative line and not allow universal suffrage in Hong Kong in 2007/08.
