The discrimination that Hong Kong clock and watch manufacturers suffered during last year ’ s International Jewellery, Clock and Watch Fair at Basel, Switzerland caused grave concern. Hong Kong has been a major competitor of Swiss watchmakers ever since the mid 70s when electronic watches were first launched. With HK ’ s initial emphasis on providing quality products at relatively low prices, many Swiss manufacturers of clock and watch components were driven out of business. Subsequently, when HK started to cooperate with overseas clock and watch buyers in OEM and ODM manufacturing, the survival of mid to low-end Swiss brand clocks and watches was further eroded.
