Hong Kong Baptist University was founded as a private, Baptist denomination-sponsored institution in 1956. The campus was situated inside Pui Ching Middle School. Over half a century, BU practiced ''whole-person education' with emphasis on personality development as well as knowledge acquisition. In 1982, the then Baptist College made a hard choice to end the Civil Engineering Department in return for obtaining government funding. This decision now proved to be visionary. The College was upgraded to a university in 1994. It even has its Student Residence Hall this year, providing students with colorful hall life. Hong Kong Baptist University is determined to lead the trend of study programmes and pioneered in several areas. The School of Communication trained numerous experts for the local media field in the past 34 years. Baptist University is the first to react on the Chinese medicine education and the School of Chinese Medicine was set up in 1998. In the programme for European Research, students are required to work in companies in Europe for 1 year. They are trained to be leaders with global vision and independent thinking.
