Shiu Sin-por (Executive Director, One Country Two Systems Research Institute) attributes much of what is happening politically, in particular the July 1 mass rally, to people's misunderstanding of the Basic Law. Discusses the patriotic requirement of all legislators and analyses the different approaches Beijing may take regarding Hong Kong people's demand for democracy. Explains the urban renewal renovation scheme and the three criteria old buildings must meet to qualify for government subsidies for renovation. Looks at the problems government faces in carrying out long-term maintenance of old districts.
