The huge protest on July 1 (04 Jul 2004)

Printer-friendlyPrinter-friendly

Lee Cheuk-yan (Member, Confederation of Trade Unions) says the huge turnout in the July 1 mass rally shows that people do want universal suffrage and that they are fed up with the Hong Kong government. The Central Government should reconsider its ban on universal suffrage in 2007/08. David Chu Yu-lin (Member, Hong Kong Progressive Alliance) says the message that the people want a bigger role in governing Hong Kong is quite clear to the Central Government and it should take steps to meet this challenge. But it is impossible to ask the National People's Congress to change its decision on universal suffrage.
