Impact of the US presidential election (07 Nov 2004)


George W. Bush has won a second term as President of the United States. Examines how Bush's emphasis on moral values affects US foreign policy and its impact on China and other Asian countries. Mark Michelson (Vice Chairman, APCO Asia Limited) says voters, motivated by moral values, feel very strongly on the Taiwan issue because it is a democracy and has close connection with Christianity. Glenn Shive (Director, Hong Kong-America Centre) says Bush has to balance pragmatic Republicans who emphasize trade with China and conservatives who are concerned about issues such as abortion and religious freedom in China.
