In Hong Kong until the 24th November you have the chance to see an exhibition of paintings by a man formerly often described as an "enfant terrible" of the New York arts scene. But Julian Schnabel is more than just a painter. In recent years, he walked away from that art scene and reinvented himself in an entirely new medium. In fact, he took the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival for "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly". He talked to The Works about his life and art this week. Published in 1997, the novel "Silk" was originally about a hundred pages long. Written by Alessandro Baricco, it became an international bestseller. Director Francois Girard, who previously directed "The Red Violin" decided to turn it into a movie. But how easy is it to make a successful film adaptation of a novel known for its poetic prose? Reviewer Gary Pollard didn't find it an entirely successful venture. First staged in 465 BC, "Prometheus Bound", is part of a trilogy written by Aeschylus, the father of Greek tragedy. Of the three plays, "Prometheus Bound" is the only one of which the full text survives. As part of the Mediterranean Arts Festival, the National Theatre of Greece performed the world premiere of the play in Hong Kong last week. We filmed it, and spoke with director Sotiris Hatzakis. And we end this week's show with one of America's great dance groups: the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The group was in Hong Kong last week, performing as well as conducting master classes for local dancers. We filmed highlights of their show.
