Kan Tai-Keung - Ink Painting and Graphics; Film Review "Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street"; Guitarist Yang Xuefei; Sichuan Opera Face-Changing and Huge Puppets (05 Feb 2008)

The many possibilities created by combining ink and water have, for centuries, captured the imaginations of Chinese artists. Renowned local designer Kan Tai-keung is no exception. Kan has long incorporated ink painting into his designs. Right now you can see two exhibitions featuring his work. One, a dialogue in posters between both Kan and German designer Erhard Gruettner, is at City Hall until 12th February. The other, an exhibition of Kan's paintings, is at the Hong Kong University Museum and Art Gallery until the beginning of March. Tim Burton's latest movie "Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street" has throat cutting, blood spraying, bodies falling head first onto a stone cellar floor, and someone burned alive in an oven … all the ingredients of a contemporary slasher movie. But it isn't a slasher movie; it's a musical, and the story is hardly contemporary, people have been thrilling to the antics of Sweeney Todd for 150 years. Reviewer Gary Pollard tells us more. Over the weekend classical guitarist Yang Xuefei was in Hong Kong playing, with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez", as well as pieces by Respighi and Beethoven. Xuefei's now earning increasing acclaim as a world-class guitarist, but when she started to learn as a child in Beijing, it was hard to find teachers, hard to find music to play, and she soon realised she was going to have to forge her own musical path. Finally, in our studio, and to begin setting the mood for Lunar New Year celebrations, Sichuan opera performers give a demonstration of puppetry and face changing.
