Reviews some of the history of Hong Kong, which has long been an immigrant city. At the beginning of the twentieth century, many businessmen from Shanghai and Guangdong Province came to Hong Kong with large amounts of capital. Their immigration was an important foundation for the later prosperity of Hong Kong. After the war, lots of immigrants from Mainland China flushed in and the population grew rapidly. This provided labour force that led to a surge in industry.
