Pina Bausch's "Vollmond"; Film Review - "Juno"; Mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins in Hong Kong; Performing in the Studio - The Miranda Chin Dance Company. (04 Mar 2008)

One of the greatest modern dance groups, the Tanztheater Wuppertal, was performing in Hong Kong over the weekend as part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Its founder Pina Bausch is a towering figure in modern dance, and inspires great loyalty in her dancers, many of whom have worked with her for decades. In her dance "Vollmond" the performers splash and swirl through torrents of water, in a visually and dramatically dazzling full moon landscape. Coming of age movies are a staple of the indie cinema, and of first-time screenwriters and directors. They are often quite personal to their creators, and usually not very expensive to make. Few have been have rapturously received as 'Juno', which won an Academy Award for Best original Screenplay for its writer, first time screenwriter, Diablo Cody. It's been a box office and critical success. Gary Pollard reviews it. On March 1st, Placido Domingo performed in Hong Kong with special guest the Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins. Jenkins showed her blossoming talent in singing in early childhood. Since her stage premiere in 2004, she has performed in various venues ranging from grand opera houses to popular stadiums. She is the only singer in musical history to simultaneously hold the Number 1, 2 and 3 position in the classical album charts in Britain. She is also the only female artist ever to win two consecutive classical Brit awards. We end the programme with dance. The Miranda Chin Dance Company is currently creating a series of dances based on the martial arts and Chinese medical ideas. In her new piece, Miranda Chin says she wants to explore the traditional Chinese concepts of the nourishing life. She explains it to us, and her dancers perform a brief excerpt.
