THE PIONEERING SPIRIT: STEPHEN HAWKING'S JUNE VISIT TO HONG KONG PROMPTED A MEDIA FRENZY AND BROUGHT SCIENCE TO THE FORE OF AN OTHERWISE COMMERCIALLY-MINDED CITY. YET SCIENCE IS NOT FAR FROM THE MINDS OF MANY OF HONG KONG'S YOUTH. SOME HAVE PURSUED A HIGH LEVEL OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING DESPITE THE NOTORIOUS WORKLOAD OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS, GARNERING AWARDS AT INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS WITH INVENTIONS SUCH AS A PROSTHETIC LEG AND A HOME SECURITY ROBOT. SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING ARE ENTERPRISES THAT HAVE A LONG RETURN PERIOD. SO HOW DO STUDENTS BALANCE THIS COMMITMENT WITH THE RIGOURS OF THE HONG KONG SECONDARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM? OUR SUMMER INTERN JESSICA CHONG INVESTIGATES THE STORIES OF THE PIONEERING SPIRITS WHO COULD....AND ALSO CATCHES UP WITH A FAMILIAR FACE.
