The Price of (Electrical) Power; Public Sector Broadcasting Review; Lunar New Year Entrepreneurs; New Year Greetings (27 Jan 2006)

For decades, Hongkong Electric and China Light & Power have provided our electricity. As they're utilities as well as private companies, Scheme of Control Agreements limit their maximum profit margin. The government's holding a public consultation aimed at revising that Scheme of Control. The power companies are not happy. The day before our first broadcast the Committee on the Review of Public Service Broadcasting held its first meeting. The day before that, Legco's Information, Technology and Broadcasting Panel asked the committee's members and other involved parties to discuss the review and its implications. For some people an essential part of any Lunar New Year celebration is a trip to the market to buy flowers, decorations, and novelties. Traditionally the markets have been run by long-time stallholders and business people, but increasingly a new breed of entrepreneur is taking part. Finally, the Lunar New Year's traditionally a time for friends, neighbours, and relatives to exchange greetings and best wishes. We looked a little further afield, and asked entertainers and sports figures from a variety of places, for their New Year hopes and greetings.
