Public Service Broadcasting Review; Education Reforms and the Pressures on Hong Kong's Teachers (20 Jan 2006)

Printer-friendlyPrinter-friendly

Radio Television Hong Kong has been the focus of many news reports this week, despite government claims that it's not the focus of a review of public service broadcasting that was finally announced on Tuesday. We discuss the review with the chairman of the review committee, Ray Wong; Assistant Director of Broadcasting for Radio, Tai Keen-man; and legislator Emily Lau. Hong Kong's a competitive place, and the rat-race starts early. There's a lot of pressure on children to get into a fast-track kindergarten if they want to enter the better schools and universities. The pressures affect teachers too, and they - and the government's education reforms - are being blamed for the recent suicides of two members of the profession.
