The Shoes From China (28 Dec 2004)

Printer-friendlyPrinter-friendly

China is now the world's most prolific producer of consumer products. For instance, it made 6 billion pairs of shoes for export in 2003. Sixty-two million of them went to Spain, causing panic among Spanish shoemakers. In September 2004, frustration finally boiled over in Elche, the traditional hub of the Spanish shoemaking industry. Several hundred local shoemakers staged a demonstration that went out control, and a Chinese-owned warehouse was burnt to the ground.
