Wastward ho : in the backwaters (17 May 2001)

Printer-friendlyPrinter-friendly

Talks about China's efforts to develop the western region of China and looks at the efforts of residents of a rural community near Chongqing to build a road in order to open up to the outside world. The programme also shows how a town in Gansu has completely shifted and laid a fiber-optic network to enable residents to use the Internet. Also looks at how the government encourages farmers to change farming practice to produce cash crops rather than subsistence crops. Residents also hope to promote tourism, but which on the other hand brings great challenges to old traditions.
