What has the government done to win back the support of the middle-class? (01 Feb 2004)

Printer-friendlyPrinter-friendly

The Chief Executive said in his Policy Address that the government understood the aspiration of the middle-class and would involve them more in political affairs. Lau Siu-kai (Head, Central Policy Unit) says winning back the support of the middle-class is a long-term process. The government will involve the upper middle-class, particularly those who are moderate to conservative with similar views with the government, in policy-making advisory bodies, and in doing so creates a broader governing coalition. He denies the government rejects people who promote democracy. He says the government wants the middle-class to see that it can represent their interest.
