Much of the world seems to be dazzled by China ’ s rapid rate of economic growth. Indeed, in famous cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, the changes that have taken place in the past decade have been nothing short of breathtaking. Even in lesser cities like Fuqing in Fujian Province, new and posh houses seem to be appearing every day. But away from the glitz and glamour of such cities, perhaps catching little of the world ’ s attention, are rural communities in a desperate struggle for survival.
