Researcher identity is a unique personal number assigned to each researcher upon registration so that you can be easily distinguishable accurately from other authors with similar names in the online community and connect your research information automatically across a wide range of online databases. ORCID is a non-profit organization to provide a persistent digital identifier (an ORCID iD) as your researcher identity, which has a lot of benefits:
- Author Names Disambiguation :
ORCID iD helps distinguish your works from other researchers with same or similar names. It is unique in its ability to reach across disciplines, research sectors and national boundaries. - Improve Discoverability of Your Research Publications :
ORCID is indexed by Google Scholar and linked in key databases like Web of Science and Scopus. Your research outputs will gain extra discoverability. - Connect Your Work :
ORCID iD is now widely embedded in key workflows such as research profile maintenance, manuscript submissions, or grant applications, etc. - Stay with you throughout your Career :
ORCID iD is unique and persistent. It connects your works throughout your scholarly career, regardless of job change or name variance appears in different publications. - Benefit you in many funding schemes :
With effect from the 2020/21 exercise, all local academics in Hong Kong must provide a valid ORCID iD in grant applications in all capacity under all research funding schemes administered by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of UGC. - Facilitate collaboration and networking :
Enhance networking opportunities and help potential collaborators find you. - Enhance your reputation :
Help you take control of what people see when they search for you online, and thus enhancing your reputation and making yourself and your research more visible.

The Library recognizes the importance of establishing your researcher identity and has initiated the ORCID @ Lingnan Registration Service since 2016. The service is now integrated with Lingnan Scholars to provide Lingnan researchers a one-stop platform to connect their research outputs with ORCID record in a seamless way so that Lingnan Scholars can update your ORCID publication list automatically. Lingnan academic staff, research postgratuate students and doctorate taught postgraduate students are welcome to create/connect their ORCID iD via their Lingnan Scholars profile to save your time in updating both platforms.
