If your timetable cannot fit into the schedule below, or you want to learn a topic not listed below, the Library is happy to offer classes by appointment for groups of 10 or more users. Please refer to Request for Library Workshops for details.

Research Information Resources Discovery Workshops

To introduce the major functions of "1-Search" and other searching skills for finding different types of resources for academic research. Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand the basic and advance functions in 1-Search and to search across the Library resources for books, journals, articles, e-resources, etc.
  • Set up personalized options in 1-Search, such as “My Favourites” and “alerts”; and
  • Search for different research resources beyond our Library

To introduce search strategies in 1-Search and other specific resources for Arts and Social Sciences, and to assess the significance of the information found. Hands-on exercises will be provided.

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Master the searching skills in 1-Search and other library subscribed platforms for academic information
  • Have an in-depth understanding on specific resources on Arts and Humanities, and Social Sciences subjects
  • Evaluate the research information found; and
  • Recognise the ethical use of information

To provide fundamental knowledge of the 2 major news databases. Basic skills on detecting fake news will also be discussed.

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Explore the functions of Factiva and Nexis Uni to discover news articles
  • Understand how to locate company information, industry profiles and legal cases; and
  • Learn basic principles of spotting fake news, and steps to evaluate news sources

To illustrate the skills in searching for company information, and other specific resources for Business Studies, and to assess the significance of the information found. Hands-on exercises will be provided.

  • Master the searching skills in 1-Search and other library subscribed platforms for company information; and
  • Have an in-depth understanding on specific resources to find business information and financial statistics effectively

To introduce different databases (e.g. Statista, CEIC, WDI) for retrieving useful statistical data for your quantitative research.

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Distinguish between data and statistics
  • Learn the statistical resources in the Library collection; and
  • Search and use some popular financial databases and statistical resources on the Internet

To discuss thoroughly about the APA citation format. Basic functions of selected citation management tools (like RefWorks) will also be introduced.

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Main points of APA Citation Style
  • How to create citations and bibliography in APA Style for different types of resources; and
  • Know the basic functions on importing and exporting citations in other free citation management tools (e.g. RefWorks, Zotero)

Database & Application Workshops

A representative from S&P Capital IQ will deliver basic skills on using the S&P RatingsDirect Capital IQ on finding financials and reports.

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand the core functions of the S&P RatingsDirect Capital IQ interface; and
  • Apply the database to search for financials, credit reports of a company or a sovereignty, company information, etc

A representative from CNKI will introduce the basic functions of the database to find out journal articles and statistical yearbook information from this Chinese database.

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand the basic functions in CNKI to search for journal articles and other resources; and
  • Use the database on advanced academic research

A representative from Tableau will introduce the basic techniques on using Tableau to manage and visualise your research data.

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand core functions of the Tableau interface
  • Analyse your data with visualisations (e.g. map, time-series & trends); and
  • Build interactive visualizations with the Tableau dashboard

A representative from Bloomberg will give us an overview of the database for searching and downloading instant financial data, news and reports.

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand terminology and core functions of the Bloomberg interface; and
  • Locate instant financial data of investment markets, company filings, company and industrial news and world macroeconomic news

A representative from Eikon will deliver basic knowledge on using the database for researching financial data and news.

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand the core functions of the Thomson Reuters Eikon interface; and
  • Locate real-time financial data, ownership data on public corporations, etc.

Research Development Workshop

Target at Postgraduates; ALL are welcome!

Developing a good research title is an essential skill for every researcher, as it may affect the visibility and citability of the research output. Postgraduates and young researchers are invited to attend this workshop in which they can learn the library resources and searching techniques that help framing a good research title.

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand the reasons for a good research title; and
  • Formulate your research title from research topic

Remarks:

  • A certificate of participation will be awarded to students who have attended five workshops at a minimum, with at least one from each category above.
  • All workshops will be conducted online, but with a flexibility to be changed to face-to-face mode if appropriate.
  • All workshops will be conducted in English unless specified
